Is Catholicism a cult?

WELL LETS LOOK AT SOME FACTS ABOUT THE

ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

THE 10 COMMANDMENTS

The Catholic Deception*

*the following Romanized ten commandments below were taken verbatim from, "Growing in Christian Morality" by Julia Ahlers, Barbara Allaire, and Carl Koch, page 40. It has both nihil obstat and imprimatur which are official declarations that a book or pamphlet is free of Catholic doctrinal error. The authors have used the NRSV--and they've even corrupted the corrupted!

What's worse is that the authors of this book know these commandments are deceitful. Look at what they say:

...These are the Ten Commandments, from Exodus, chapter 20, in the traditional way they are

The King James Bible

Second Commandment

You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain.

Second Commandment

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.

Third Commandment

Third Commandment

Seventh Commandment

Eighth Commandment

Tenth Commandment

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

The Catholic religion deletes the second commandment

and

makes the 10th commandment into two commandments.

If you follow them all the way down from the second commandment you'll see the Catholic religion is always one ahead of the King James.

Finally at the tenth commandment they break it into two and make it the 9th and 10th commandments.

So why does the Roman Catholic Church

delete the second commandment?

WHY?

WELL LETS LOOK AT THE SECOND COMMANDMENT

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under

the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.

MARY "THE HOLY MOTHER"

 KJV says in Jeremiah 44:17

But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

"What is the Assumption of Mary?"

The Assumption of Mary (or the Assumption of the Virgin) is a doctrine which teaches that after the mother of Jesus died, she was resurrected, glorified, and taken bodily to heaven. The word assumption is taken from a Latin word meaning “to take up.” The Assumption of Mary is taught by the Roman Catholic Church and, to a lesser degree, the Eastern Orthodox Church.

The doctrine of the Assumption of Mary had its beginnings in the Byzantine Empire around the 6th Century. An annual feast honoring Mary gradually grew into a commemoration of Mary’s death called the Feast of Dormition (“falling asleep”). As the practice spread to the West, an emphasis was placed on Mary’s resurrection, and the glorification of Mary’s body as well as her soul, and the name of the feast was thereby changed to the Assumption. It is still observed on August 15, as it was in the Middle Ages. The Assumption of Mary was made an official dogma of the Roman Catholic Church in 1950 by Pope Pius XII.

The Bible does record God “assuming” both Enoch and Elijah into Heaven (Genesis 5:24; 2 Kings 2:11). Therefore, it is not impossible that God would have done the same with Mary. It is not wrong to believe that God “assumed” Mary into heaven. The problem is that there is no biblical basis for the Assumption of Mary. The Bible does not record Mary's death or again mention Mary after Acts chapter 1. Rather, the doctrine of the Assumption is the result of lifting Mary to a position comparable to that of her Son. Some Roman Catholics go so far as to teach that Mary was resurrected on the third day, just like Jesus, and that Mary ascended into Heaven, just like Jesus. The New Testament teaches that Jesus was resurrected on the third day (Luke 24:7) and that He ascended bodily into heaven (Acts 1:9). To assume the same thing concerning Mary is to ascribe to her some of the attributes of Christ. While the idea of the Assumption of Mary is not heretical in and of itself; in the Roman Catholic Church, the Assumption of Mary is an important step towards why Mary is venerated, worshipped, adored, and prayed to. To teach the Assumption of Mary is a step toward making her equal to Christ, essentially proclaiming Mary’s deity.

THE CATHOLIC ROSARY

rosary.jpg

Typically, praying the rosary involved repeating certain phrases over and over again, such as "Hail Mary" or "Gloria Patri." If one is using rosary beads as they pray, they will typically repeat a set pattern as they move through the chain of beads, saying a "hail Mary" (or what ever happens to be the phrase to chant at the time) as they grip a bead between index finger and thumb. I have seen the rosary prayed and I recall the woman praying it was rapidly moving through a flurry of "Hail Mary" and "Gloria Patri" such that what she was saying was difficult to understand, she sounded like she was "talking in tongues" or babbling.

What can be said about the babbling of praying the rosary can be applied to the practice of Lecto Divinia where one uses a phrase from Scripture as a mantra. The intent of using a mantra is to repeat the phrase or word over and over again in order to induce an altered state of consciousness which those who practice this form of meditation will refer to as "clearing the mind" or "quieting the heart." The reason for wanting to alter consciousness is to prepare the practitioner so they can experience God, or as those who practice such meditation are prone to say, "to hear the Holy Spirit speaking." When Jesus taught the disciples how to pray He commanded, "And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."Matthew 6:7-8

Christ's words applies equally to the babbling of the rosary, Lecto Divinia, or any other meditation practice invoking a mantra in order to reach God, or emptying the mind (or heart) for the purposes of hearing God. As the Lutheran confession puts it, these are "godless ceremonies."

What does the Bible say about

confession of sin to a priest?

confession.gif

The Roman Catholic Church bases their practice of confession to a priest primarily on Catholic tradition. Catholic do point to John 20:23; “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." From this verse, Catholics claim that God gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins, and that authority was passed on to the successors of the apostles, e.g. the bishops and priests of the Roman Catholic Church.

There are several problems with this interpretation. (1) John 20:23 nowhere mentions confession of sin. (2) John 20:23 nowhere promises, or even hints, that the authority to forgive sins would be passed on to the successors of the apostles. Jesus’ promise was specifically directed to the apostles. (3) The New Testament nowhere states that the apostles would even have successors to their apostolic authority. Similarly, Catholics point to Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 (binding and loosing) as evidence for the Catholic Church’s authority to forgive sins. The same three above points apply equally to these Scriptures.

Again, the concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. We are to confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9). As New Covenant believers, we do not need mediators between us and God. We can go to God directly because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. 1 Timothy 2:5; “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
